When the temperature drops, the number of DIY attempts and subsequent callouts to professionals’ skyrockets. Here are 4 of the top trade winter job callouts you may expect to prepare you for the cold months ahead.

1.Radiators

Instead of doing things like bleeding a radiator or checking for issues, some homeowners think that wrapping it in towels will help spread the heat more effectively. You might have seen various interesting and quick fixes for radiators in the past, whether to avoid bleeding them, cleaning up leaks, or trying out strange ‘energy-saving hacks’ like this that might cause damage. Since many people are still using their heating less than before, get ready not only to bleed radiators this winter but also to provide some useful and safe tips on energy efficiency while fixing some of those quick fixes and hacks.

2. Burst Pipes

Did you know that one of the most frequent claims insurers handle is for ‘escape of water’ damage? The Association of British Insurers notes that the average claim for burst pipe damage falls between £6,500 and £7,500. Why not assist your clients in getting ready for winter by providing a check-up for their pipes and taps? It’s a good idea to keep some lagging in the back of your van. We witnessed firsthand that a member of the team’s parents’ home was flooded last Christmas, leaving them without a home for almost a year.

3.Chimneys

Instead of getting professional chimney sweeps or having it blocked up the right way, some homeowners try DIY methods, stuffing all sorts up a chimney to clear it or block it. This can lead to health issues due to resulting dust, or poor cleaning that might cause chimney fires. Encourage your clients to hire experts if this isn’t their area of expertise.

However, the other end of the chimney can pose a significant problem, something many may not consider. A significant number of roof leaks are often around the flashing on a chimney stack. With the storms we’ve experienced this autumn, it’s possible that the flashing has been torn off entirely, and it’s not just the missing tile causing those sudden leaks.

4.Roof Repairs

It is not uncommon that roof repair callouts occur within the winter months, despite sometimes the problem being present within the summer. Roofs sometimes need fixing or even replacing. They’re crucial for our homes, facing weather and birds, so it’s important not to forget about taking care of them, however, it may be a good idea to start posting on social media, asking your clients to check their roofs now.
